Consumer Price Index

The CPI is a statistical estimate constructed using the prices of a sample of representative items whose prices are collected periodically.

TCSD produces a CPI report every quarter (March, June, September and December) as well as an yearly overall report.

  • The quarterly inflation rate for the third quarter of 2025 was 0.9 percent compared to -0.5 percent for the second quarter of 2024.
  • The annual inflation rate was 3.7 percent for the third quarter of 2025 compared to -2.0 percent for the third quarter of the previous year.
  • The average annual inflation for September 2025 is 1.0 percent.

The Food group index has the biggest quarterly increase of 9.1 percent, influenced by:

  • The Meat index which increased by 9.1 percent

The Housing group index increased by 0.8 percent, influenced by:

  • The House Maintenance index which increased by 5.9 percent

The Alcohol & Tobacco group decreased by 4.1 percent, influenced by:

  • Alcohol index which decreased by 5.6 percent.

ANNUAL CHANGES

The Food group items had the highest annual contribution to CPI which increased
by 11.7 percent, influenced by;

  • Meat index increased by 28.0 percent.

The Clothing & Textiles group increased by 9.4 percent, influenced by:

  • Clothing index increased by 1.1 percent.

The Alcohol & Tobacco group decreased by 4.1 percent, influenced by:

  • Alcohol’s index decreased 5.6 percent.

Q4 2020 CPI Report

The Tuvalu Central Statistics Division (CSD) has released a report on Consumer Price Index detailing indices, inflation, and more. The report encompasses CPI statistics for years prior to 2020 with emphasis on statistics for the 4th quarter for the year 2020.

CPI 2018 Yearly Report

When compared to the June quarter of 2018, the index increased by (+2.3%), main city index increased by (+2.7%) while second city index slightly increased by (+0.6%). At national level, the expenditure groups that contributed to the increase over the same quarter of last year were: Food(+4.6%), Transport (+1.8%), Miscellaneous (+1.7%), Recreation (+1.3%), Drinks and Tobacco, Clothing and Footwear and Communication stood at (+0.5%) respectively, Education and Housing Supplies at(+0.4%) each and Housing Utilities (+0.3%). The increase in these expenditure groups were driven by the increase in price movements of Root crops, Fruits and Vegetables, Automatic Fuel and oil, Toiletries and other personal care products, Sports Membership fees, Packet cigarettes, Island dress, Mobile phones, Furniture and Furnishes,School fees and Electricity supply charges.
